The Village of Ilion has become known Statewide and nationally as the Town of muddy waters. What residents need to understand is what the consequences and implications in association with this negative personification are.
1.Business cannot do business: Take a trip to Dunkin Donuts, McDonalds, Stewarts, or any place in the village to enjoy a coffee, meal, nice ice cold drink of soda or water, and you will be denied, causing you to make a trip outside the village for the same purchase. this has caused thousands in lost revenues and reputations. major purchases of bottled water, filtering equipment, and plumbing fixtures have added thousands in annual expenses and continue to do so. Water rates have skyrocketed, and clean usable water remains allusive.
2.Health at risk: the most obvious consequence of chronic boil water advisories is the ever-looming reality that the public's health maybe at risk. Boil water advisories are issued to advise and warn the public the drinking and use can be detrimental to their health. This is caused by the high probability or actual disseverance of E. coli bacteria in the drinking water.
3, Decreased Property Values: One of the costliest effects of chronic water quality issues, Boil water advisors, conservation of water, etc. are the decrease in property values. Ask any homeowner looking to value and or sell their home and most if not, all will affirm that the Village water issues have put a tremendous burden on price, marketing, and ultimate sale of homes. Home buyers see an unsafe, unhealthy community, extra utility expenses, inability to utilize pools water lawns, and major expenses in purchase of bottled water, filters, and other plumbing fixtures.
Future cost of service line to home NYSDOH data shows $5,000.00- $10,000.00, replacing hot water heaters, washing machine, dishwashers, refrigeration with Water/Ice dispensers, bathroom fixture, etc.
Despite all of this, some, including many elected officials, may say these are temporary hardships that must be endured. All Communities are facing the same issue.
Facts do not support this claim. Main breaks, temporary disruptions in service, Boil water advisories in communities served by MVWA are few and far between, resolved in a matter of hours not days and weeks, not prolonged over years as Ilion.
The true hardships of this ongoing water issue can be seen and witnessed by visiting our Nursing home where residents cannot be washed or bathed with clean water, eat on paper plates, and cannot enjoy ice cold drinks or coffee.
Similarly, our residents who reside in Prindle Apartments and or London Towers, face constant discolored water issues, staining clothes, and making drinking and bathing a very uncomfortable / unhealthy situation. But again, to many elected officials, the poor, health compromised, and less financially fortunate resident barely matter. Only in time of census and or applying for Federal or State grants, are they considered worthy of considerations, this shows in elected officials’ inactions and policies.
Chronic Boil water advisories and chronic poor water quality issues are the greatest marketing tool for Not open for business!
When Government is totally out of the drinking water business in the /village is the time when regrowth and revitalization can occur.
Segregation of truth remains

Ken Long Brian Lamica I guess I don’t understand then if the chlorine system is in place, why the water isn’t disinfected?

Katrina Engell I honestly haven't been following the issues behind ilions water and discoloration, but if I'm correct we have been under 5 boil water advisory within the past year or so. What efforts are being made to correct this ongoing issue?

Fifth grade unknowledgeable explanations. No one in the department and or on the MUB advisory Board can explained it to him. UV was added to the DOH Sanitary code part 5(drinking water) as a mandatory treatment / disinfection for ALL surface water supplies in NYS, (exempting NYC) in 2013. This is in addition to chlorine. Chlorine is continued to be used as UV does not have a residual that can be monitored, it is explicitly point of contact. Also, UV is 99.99 effective in destroying viruses, bacteria etc. Chlorine 99.9. UV gives the added protection of one logarithm or 10 x that of chlorine.
